ISO 19011:2018 defines an audit for a "systematic, independent and documented system for acquiring audit proof [information, statements of fact or other facts that happen to be related and verifiable] and analyzing it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit standards [a set of guidelines, procedures or prerequisites] are fulfilled."
